Dad arrested on gun, drug charges a week after deadly pit collapse

STANLEY, N.C. (WBTV)- A Lincoln County man, who was digging a two-story-deep pit on his property when it collapsed, killing two children, has now been arrested on unrelated charges.

31-year-old Jordan Arwood was arrested by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office on Monday. He was charged with possession of a weapon by a felon and a drug charge.

He was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.

Last week, deputies removed firearms and a marijuana plant from Arwood's mobile home. Officers say they found six firearms, including an AR-15 rifle.

Arwood's 6-year-old daughter, Chloe Jade Arwood, and his nephew, 7-year-old James Levi Caldwell, were fatally buried when the rain-soaked walls of the pit collapsed last Sunday evening.

Arwood was operating a backhoe Sunday night in the pit when the walls collapsed and he called 911.

Prom season kickoff: Drive to Live 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The North Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting Operation: Drive to Live to kickoff prom season.

Operation: Drive to Live involves troopers enforcing traffic laws around schools and holding traffic safety education programs at high schools around the state.

The operation starts Monday, April 15 from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. all week.

According to National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, young drivers, ages 15- to 20-years old, are more vulnerable to death and injury on our roadways – traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America and North Carolina.

Mile for mile, teenagers are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers. Over 50% of teens killed in car crashes weren't using their seat belts.

No swimming advisory lifted in Lake Norman cove

DENVER, NC (WBTV)- The Lincoln County Health Department approved Lincoln County Public Works canceling a No Swimming Advisory for all residents in the cove area bordering the 8300 block of Ranger Island Marina Road, Denver on Monday.

On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, a wastewater spill occurred.

The estimated amount of the spill that reached Lake Norman was 20 gallons.  The spill occurred due to a commercial vehicle damaging a sewer connection, and the untreated sewage flowed into a cove that runs into Lake Norman in the Catawba River Basin

Lincoln County Public Works has tested daily three sites for fecal coliform levels at the 8300 block of Ranger Island Marina Road cove area.

Three consecutive samples <200/ml were received at all three testing sites and all sampling meets the Division of Water Quality standards.

Wells Fargo boosts profits, ATMs

Wells Fargo boosts profits, ATMs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Wells Fargo has announced record profits for the 1st quarter of 2013. The bank is also boosting its ATMs.

"This ATM knows your habits and your features and what you do here," says Wells Fargo Area President Leigha Smith. She introduced us today to the bank's high tech new ATMs. She says they're more like a personal assistant than the old money machine we're used to.

"This get-to-know you better ATM really knows our customers," she says. "They get cash, that's the first thing that comes up. If they typically deposit checks or cash that's the first item that comes up, deposit cash."

Sometimes personal greetings even come up.

"That was a little shocking to me," says Wells customer Joe Marshall. "On my birthday, it said ‘Happy Birthday.' And it started the week of my birthday, and I was like how do they know that? But it showed up and I appreciate that."

Family of man killed in marina blast awarded $1.5M

LINCOLNTON, N.C. (AP)- The family of a man killed in a Lincoln County marina explosion has been awarded $1.5 million.

Jurors took less than an hour to make that decision Wednesday in the case of Nate Coppick. The 19-year-old was killed in 2008 while refueling a boat at Westport Marina.

The jury said Petroleum Equipment and Service had knowingly put people in danger by installing a piece of equipment that the state said was illegal to use at marinas.

A lawyer for the company said Nate was at fault for fueling a boat while it was running.

An attorney for Coppick's estate said the fuel nozzle hold-open latch Coppick was using didn't work properly and that at least 30 gallons of gas overflowed before the explosion.
