The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 700 was named the Explorer Post of the Year at the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council annual Explorer banquet held January 15, at Cleveland Community College in Shelby.

It was the second year in a row that the post has won the prestigious Explorer Award in the eleven-county Piedmont Council.

Lt. Alan Houser was named the 2012 Law Enforcement Explorer Advisor of the Year.

Houser, who is the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Detention Administrator, serves as the lead advisor for the post.

Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter said, “The loyalty, dedication and commitment to service by this fine group of advisors and young folks makes me swell with pride for their accomplishments over the last two years.  I am extremely proud to be represented by this great group and look for much of the same in the coming years.”

2012 was a highly successful and active year for the explorer program. Explorers attended the 2012 National law Enforcement Exploring Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado.  The group attended seminars on the latest law enforcement topics, and competed in individual and team competitions.  Explorer Post 700 placed in the top 10 percent of the nation for their work in White Collar Criminal Investigations.

The Explorers volunteered at many local community events and put in a number of hours training and competing in many state level competitions. They also assisted the Sheriff’s Office Unwanted Prescription Medication Drop-Off Program that collected 494 pounds of medications.  The volunteer hours, training and competition allowed the Explorers to gain valuable information that will help them throughout their lives.

Explorer Post 700 has 25 Explorers and 8 advisors with each member contributing to the success of the program. They say they are honored to receive the award and look forward to having another successful year in 2013.
