MAIDEN, NC (WBTV) - Bill Beard remembers the simple moment when he decided he wanted to be a barber. "I remember when I was a little boy sitting in the chair waiting to get my hair cut, and I thought, 'I could make a living doing that," said Beard.
For 64 of his 84 years, he's been doing just that. Now set up in a small shop near Maiden, Mr. Beard cuts just as clean as he did when he was younger.
He sees sometimes dozens of clients a day. "Clients" isn't exactly what he calls the people who have him cut their hair, they're more like friends.
Beard's Barber Shop charges $9 for a cut. The price hasn't gone up since 2006. There's a sign on one wall of the shop that clearly advises those who visit, "No cussing". Beard says he's heard so many stories in his hair-cutting career, he could write a book.
But he's not writing one any time soon. He's too busy right now, making people smile.
