Who wants to Go Pro with Steve Smith?

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

Owner of local restaurant passes away

A local man and owner of a local restaurant died after being rushed to the hospital, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Ralph Rudisill, owner of Zippers Restaurant and Lounge on Generals Boulevard in Lincolnton, passed away Monday.

According to Zippers’ Facebook page, Ralph was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and the restaurant was closed. Friends asked for prayers for him and his family.

Monday afternoon, a post on the page stated that Rudisill had died.

“Our hearts very heavy right now. Some very sorrowful and sad news to inform you all with. Ralph has gone home to be with our Lord. We thank you all for the many merciful prayers that you all have spoken today and we ask that you continue to pray for his family, the Zippers family and to all of his loyal customers... friends and loved ones. Ralph had a big heart and loved you all very much!”

The post went on to say, ”Heaven definitely gained another angel today.

Second chance means $3 million win for Lincoln County woman

Emily Stone, a physician assistant from the town of Denver in Lincoln County, has won the largest second-chance prize in N.C. Education Lottery history: $3 million.

“I’m just overjoyed,” Stone said when she found out she won. “This is an amazing prize.”

Second-chance drawings are a feature of some instant scratch-off games, allowing players to enter their non-winning tickets online for another chance to win. Stone’s winning entry was randomly selected from a total of 276,119 made in the Holiday Millions second-chance drawing, held on April 3.

Stone had the option of claiming the $3 million prize in annual installments of $150,000 over the next 20 years, or a one-time cash payment of $1.8 million. Stone took the cash option, worth $1,224,000 after taxes.

“I am going to pay off all my debt, that’s the first thing I’m going to do,” she said.

USO of NC names Jeff Byers as Ambassador

The USO of NC, the leading organization responsible for lifting the spirits of troops and their families in North Carolina announced Thursday that Jeff Byers, a center for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, as their ambassador.

“As a child I remember looking up to soldiers with admiration, thinking of how honorable they were for their service to our country,” said Byers. “I've never lost the appreciation for their sacrifice and am grateful I can finally give back through the USO of NC. It's an honor to be part of such a selfless organization, and serve our troops for all they've given to protect our nation and our freedoms.”

Byers entered the NFL in 2010 and signed with the Carolinas Panthers in 2011.

Civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer honored in play

The Touring Theater of North Carolina is presenting its production of The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer.

Presented on a bare stage with minimal props, the drama conveys the story of a Mississippi sharecropper who rose to national prominence as a civil rights activist dedicated, among other causes, to register black voters.

Theater-goers can catch the show at the Lincoln Cultural Center, located at 403 East Main Street in Lincolnton, Saturday February 16, at 7 p.m.

Admission ranges from $8 to $10, and the play is open to the public.
